Bancroft Kitchen & Addition Project

The motivation for the Bancroft Kitchen Project was two-fold; to create a kosher kitchen, and to unify the fragmented living spaces, consisting of the kitchen, dining area, and family room. The original kitchen was an approximately 40-year-old 10x12 space, and had the main walkway cutting through the room to get into the remainder of the house. It had little cabinet space, with the original cabinets being metal.

To create the kosher kitchen, two separate sinks, two separate dishwashers, and additional cabinets to separate kosher from everyday dishes were essential. To accomplish this, a bigger and better laid-out space had to be designed, taking into account the historic nature of the house.

The unification of the disjointed rooms was achieved by removing walls, while adding an island as a visual barrier to maintain some separation. This process allowed for a greater openness and connection between the previously disconnected rooms.

With this newly created space, a kosher kitchen was finally attainable. In addition, despite the newly arranged rooms, the old house was still integrated into the new design.
